Day 51 – BBQ, originally uploaded by AndyLane78.

This weekend we have some friends visiting from “down south”. The weekend was spectacular so we decided to have a BBQ in our newly re-furbished garden. Great weekend so far, still got Sunday to look forward to 🙂

So we spent a very nice day and a half in Birmingham, England’s second city. Upon arrival we were greeted by the pounding drums of a seikh music event taking place just opposite our hotel. We stopped to check it out before heading down to the canals for some lunch. In the afternoon we just cruised the town centre visitng old hang outs from when we were at Uni.

On the way back to the hotel to drop off some shopping I took this photo of a statue on Broad Street, comissioned as a tribute to Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch and their contribution to the Industry of Birmingham and the world. To read more go to wikipedia

So it’s Friday, here in England it’s a 3-day weekend (gotta love Bank Holiday Mondays) and I’ve had a pretty damn good week at work. I’m on the radio tonight ( – 10pm to midnight – Exile with AndyL) so expect an even more cheerful show than usual!

This is the view out of the window to the left of my desk, heavily edited in photoshop, it’s actually a merge of 3 exposures, tweaked, then converted to b&w then tweaked some more 🙂 I do love photoshop!

Janet and I are off to Birmingham tomorrow so I’m not sure I’ll be able to upload tomorrow’s image tomorrow so it’ll be a double post on Sunday I guess.

Anyway, gotta put my set list together and get ready to greet the weekend!

It’s Monday which means the weekend is over, booo! But it was a nice weekend and I managed to remember to take my camera about with me so I took some snaps of the Old Market Square and the big wheel which is currently taking up most of it

On the bus this morning we had 3 generations of personal music player present. I was listening to my iPod, the bloke across from me had a personal CD player and a girl two seats in front of me was actually listening to a casette walkman! For those of you too young to remember, casettes were what preceeded CDs for the mass-distribution of music and audio in general.

Just seeing it took me back to my early teenage years, slumped on a beanbag making mix-tapes on my dad’s stereo. It wasn’t as easy as it is now, if you were transfering from a casette tape, you had to find the start of the song manually (unless you had a snazzy deck which could tell where one song ended and another started). You had to make sure the levels going out of the “Play” deck were not too high so you didn’t get any distortion on the recording.

You also only had 30 or 45 minutes to work with per side so you actually had to take the track lengths from the the inlay and work out what was going to fit on your tape! Then you actually had to be there, ready to stop the recording at the end of each song and switch the tapes and manually spool the tape forwards past the white leader tape to get the start of the black magnetic part!

Lots of fun though and it actually kept me occupied for hours as a kid. I’m not sure I miss it as such but it’s another thing which the kids of today won’t have as something to occupy their time.

This will be the first weekend in a while when we’re without somewhere to go, usually this is a good thing because it means a bit of a lie in, an afternoon wander around town and perhaps a movie in the evening or something. Unfortunately the place looks like a bomb site so it’ll be out with the hoover first thing Saturday morning to try and get it all sorted and leave some free time for the rest of the weekend.

Free time … I’ve got a lot I’d like to do with my free time this weekend. I’d like to get round to re-stringing my guitars and do a little practice, I never seem to pick them up as much as I used to these days. I’d like to go out and take some pictures, perhaps I can get out pre-dawn on Saturday so I’m back nice and early to start the house work.

I’ve been thinking about my finances and I need to get round to cancelling that gym membership, applying for a “cashback credit card” and perhaps even transferring my overdraft onto an intrest free credit card so I can pay it off more quickly without the overdraft interest charges. I was also thinking about selling my old CDs to raise some funds towards a new lens for my camera or perhaps even a new computer!

Anyway it’s still only Friday afternoon so let’s see what happens 🙂
